L.E.A.N. (Lifestyle, Exercise, Attitude & Nutrition) was first introduced by Dr. Sears in the Family Nutrition Book which was published in 1999, but is still relevant today.
It was in 2001 when Dr. Sears and Sean Foy first teamed up to incorporate L.E.A.N. into a program Sean was working on with organizations such as YMCA’s and Boys & Girls Clubs. This program was originally called Project Sozo (SOZO is Greek meaning: saved, healed and made whole) and later became the L.E.A.N. Kids program.
Although L.E.A.N. Kids had positive clinical results, it became apparent that without the involvement and education of the parents and caregivers, the positive impact on children’s health would be limited. Thus, in conjunction with the Children’s and Families Commission of Orange County, CA, work on parent focused L.E.A.N. Start and other programs began. Over the next several years, L.E.A.N. Start went through various stages of development and trials, and was ultimately implemented with clinically successful results.
In 2007, The LEAN Group, LLC was formed to create an organization that would take Dr. Sears’ L.E.A.N. beyond the borders of CA and also complete the development of additional L.E.A.N. Programs. The Certified L.E.A.N. Coach Training and Certification training weekends were first offered in the winter of 2008. In the fall of 2010, The LEAN Group, LLC introduced online Certified L.E.A.N. Coach Training and Certification courses to accommodate international coaches and those who were unable to travel to an in-person training.
